What Is Decentralized Domain Name Services?
The Decentralized Domain Name Services (DDNS) can be called Web3.0 name services, these decentralized name services allow users of a specific blockchain network to own a domain name on the blockchain, store data such as non-fungible tokens (NFT), make blockchain transactions, and participate in governance through smart contracts; these names are alphanumeric codes that are both human-readable and machine-readable contracts addresses.
Name Services | Machine-Read only | Human-Machine Readable |
---|---|---|
Etherium(.eth) | 0x0e2925B0 | John.eth |
Unstoppable(.nft) | 5TO3IPEY74 | mike.NFT |
Algorand(.algo) | ZT3HYLK2BG | Henry.Algo |
Name Service Regulatory
To maintain the directory of the internet corporation, the decentralized name services are registered with an Internet Corporation Assigning Names and Numbers (ICANN), which is a non-profit organization that protects the directory of internet domain names services, in addition, to enabling the decentralized names compatibility with the regular DNS names, name service providers utilize a decentralized porter to sort names using root zone files. The Hash Name Service(HNS) is a permission-less network that grants protocols the ability to sort DNS names using a root zone file, and also enables smart contracts to be used to create an auction system for users to bid on domain naming rights, which represents ICANN on the decentralized form.
The Purpose of Decentralized Name Service.
Name services are the newest infrastructures on blockchain built to enhance blockchain usability and are said to be the gateway to web decentralization, owning a decentralized name service allows individuals to mitigate censorship and web vulnerability, the web3 name services are currently being used on multiple blockchain networks such as Ethereum, Algorand, Solana, etc, and Have a compatible use case as the centralized domain names(DNS).
Web3.0 name service providers allow an IPFS hosting terminal functions, thereby users can upload their websites, and connect DNS names to the decentralized server, such as Org, io, com, etc, and also a gateway that allows users to connect social accounts and NFT avatars on open-sea Dapp.
Name Service SaaS Models
Every name service on the blockchain is categorized into two types of subscription which are regarded as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) models.
1)The Renewable name service is the yearly renewable name, users are expected to make a renewal to maintain ownership rights, and the price of the names is determined by the number of word figures used.
2) The Non-renewable names require no renewal of naming rights and the price is also determined by the number of figures used.
Conclusion:
There are the non-profit-orientated name services on the blockchain whereby the DAO and foundation are the decision-makers, and the construction of the DAO is made using smart contract voting; anyone can make a new proposal to maintain the growth of the protocol.
An example of nonprofit name service is the Algorand Name Service(ANS), ANS is a decentralized name service provider based on the Algorand blockchain network.
